Holtzman’s Pretzels
Holtzman’s Pretzels began in 1912 on South Railroad St. in Myerstown by George W. Holtzman and George Karsnitz. Mr. Holtzman invented the pretzel stick machine, which was distributed worldwide. The company made pretzels until 1941. The original building burned in a fire.
Myerstown Baseball
Team picture, 1910 or 1911. Town teams were sponsored by industries as well as organizations such as the Keystone Fire Company. Later teams were sponsored by the American Legion, as they are today.
Winthrop
Currently known as Bayer, located at 400 W. Stoever Avenue in Myerstown. The company began operations in 1947 and has undergone several name changes throughout the years, including Winthrop and Sterling Drug. The company is currently finishing an expansion project and employs 630 people. Bayer produces products such as pain relievers, vitamins, and Alka-Seltzer.
Hi Way Theater
Hi Way Theater – Opened in the 1920s as “The Majestic,” then in the 1930s was known as “Edwards Theater.” In the 1950s, it became the Hi Way Theater at 52 West Main Ave. It eventually closed, became a private residence, and is now occupied by Pucillo’s Pizza.
Bethel and Mt. Aetna Telephone & Telegraph Company
Directory from September 1925 includes subscribers from Bernville, Frystown, Host, Myerstown, and Wommelsdorf. A typical number included 2 digits and a letter, such as 39-X. Established in 1907, locally owned, and sold to Gen. Tel and Electronics Corporation in 1966.
